How do I get my business to appear on Google Maps?

To appear on the map you need a verified Google Business Profile with the right primary category, exact address and hours, real photos and complete information. Ranking in the local pack depends on three factors: relevance, meaning how well the profile matches the search; distance between the user and the business; and prominence, which comes from reviews, mentions and consistent information across sources. An abandoned profile loses position to a competitor who answers reviews and posts regularly.

The most underrated local channel

Someone searching “near me” or for a service in their city is at the most advanced point of the journey. They already know what they want and are choosing where to get it. That traffic converts better than any top-of-funnel campaign, and it arrives with no cost per click.

Even so, it is common to find profiles with the wrong category, outdated hours, photos from years ago and reviews unanswered for months. The competitor who covers the basics takes that space.

What optimisation involves

Category is the most important decision. The primary category determines which searches the profile is even considered for. We choose it by analysing what well-ranked competitors use, not by intuition.

Complete, exact information. Hours, attributes, services, payment methods, service area. Every filled field is one more criterion the profile can match on.

Reviews as a process, not luck. We define a request flow at the right moment in the journey and a response protocol, including for negative reviews, which need a defined tone and deadline.

Consistency with everything else. Name, address and phone have to be identical on the site, the profile and directories. Divergence weakens the local signal and also confuses AI engines, which cross-reference these sources to validate information.

FAQ

Questions about google business profile and local presence

Why does my competitor rank above me on the map?

Usually a combination of three things: a better chosen category, the volume and recency of reviews, and consistency of information across sources. Distance also counts and cannot be controlled. Relevance and prominence can. A profile with a generic category, few answered reviews and outdated data loses to an active competitor even when it sits closer.

How should we handle negative reviews?

Answer all of them, publicly, without defensiveness, and offer to resolve the issue off the channel. A negative review answered clearly often builds more trust than a profile showing nothing but perfect scores, which reads as artificial. What genuinely hurts is silence. Reviews that violate Google policy can be contested, but the process is slow and does not always succeed.

Is it worth posting updates on the profile?

Yes, in moderation and with purpose. Posts signal that the profile is active, occupy screen space for people who already found you, and let you highlight an offer at the moment of decision. It is not a reach channel like social media. It is a conversion reinforcement for people who already arrived.

We have several locations. How do we organise them?

One profile per location, managed under the same account, with standardised category and description and exact data for each address. The common mistake is duplicating profiles or using the head office address everywhere, which splits the signals and can trigger suspension. For chains it also pays to create dedicated pages per location on the site, linked to the matching profile.

How much is your operation losing each month?

Almost every company loses opportunities without knowing: conversions never recorded, leads nobody answers in time, budget going to the wrong channel. Within weeks you have that number, and the list of what to fix first.
